Sometimes masks are the way to go and the technique of Load selection and Add Mask are powerful tools that I use a lot.
But, if I understand the effect you are trying to get, you can still keep your vector object as a clipping mask if you want. Effects can be applied to vector objects so, if you select the shape in the layers panel, you can use a Gaussian Blur to soften its edges without losing the ability to later edit the shape.
